As part of our school readiness program, the Waratah's have started reading chapter books, during our rest times. The children have responded positively and are excited when it comes time to sit and listen to the continued adventures of the different characters. Using visualisation the story unfolds in pictures created in the children's imagination instead of the illustrator’s vision.
Through incorporating chapter books into our program, the children are invited to extend on their concentration skills, as they learn how to focus on a story that does not have many pictures. This allows the children to gain an even greater appreciation for the written word.
Each day, the children retell what they have learnt by illustrating their ideas into their writing journals. This experience displays their emerging comprehension skills and literacy development.
